Many more projects are planned for the future and we are excited for the possibilities these projects bring to the people of Khayelitsha!

1. HOUSING DEVELOPMENT

A housing project of 1200 mixed development units is at an advanced planning stage. The City of Cape Town is ceding 23 ha of land to KCT for the purpose of delivering a residential development that will help to alleviate the dire housing crisis confronting Khayelitsha people. This community is known for its mushrooming informal settlements and overcrowded backyards prone to shack fires and winter floods. It therefore comes as a relief that an affordable residential project is underway as a means of addressing their plight. KCT is working in collaboration with key stakeholders including the City of Cape Town, the Khayelitsha Development Forum (KDF) and interested developers in ensuring that the ideals of this project are fully realized and that consideration is given to the income levels, socioeconomic needs and cultural patterns of the community. A Show Village has been built in partnership with Power Developments through a R5 million loan facility from RMB.

2. RETAIL CENTRE EXPANSION

A R240 million project for Phase 2 of KBD development is underway and will include the expansion of the existing retail centre. A dedicated team of professional consultants is currently working on the urban design framework for this project. Once this has been delivered to the client, intensive public participation processes will be embarked upon culminating in the actual implementation of the design plans and construction of the commercial facilities.

3. TSiBA CAMPUS

Talks are also underway between KCT and the Tertiary School in Business Administration (TSiBA) authorities on the establishment of a TSiBA campus branch in Khayelitsha. TSiBA is a well-established entrepreneurial school that offers business studies to under & post graduates through academic programs that are designed in partnership with various tertiary institutions. During KCT’s annual general meeting that was held on January the 29th 2010, representatives from various community organisations expressed relief and comfort at the possibility of such an esteemed tertiary business education campus being established for the first time in the history of Khayelitsha.

4. LOOK OUT HILL

We also recently approached the City of Cape Town for the takeover of the Look Out Hill facility, which is a key tourism attraction located at the tip of Khayelitsha. We believe this centre is under-utilised and we are calling upon the City of Cape Town municipality to appoint KCT to render facility management services through a long-term agreement that will result in a complete turn-around of the said facility. In the main, the local tourism operators from Khayelitsha will be made to benefit massively through networks with the international tourism fraternity.

5. WOMEN COOPERATIVE

KCT’s Board of Trustees has recently adopted an empowerment vehicle for local women. One of its facets is the establishment of a women cooperative that specializes in office supplies and stationery products through direct links with paper manufacturers. We are currently approaching potential investors and interested business firms who may be able to contribute to moulding this programme into a viable business activity. Buyolo Business Advisory Services has been retained as a start-up and mentoring service provider, while discussions have been initiated with the National Youth Development Agency (NYDA) for the funding aspect of the programme.
