Khayelitsha is a semi- informal settlement or “township” officially developed on the outskirts of Cape Town, South Africa in 1983. Directly translated from Xhosa, the name means “our new home” and today Khayelitsha is home to an estimated 1.5 million people. It covers an area of around 47m and is the second largest township in the country.

Khayelitsha is a true mixture of old and new, affluent and poor, and the housing is a combination of informal shacks, “matchbox” houses and the more recent RDP low-cost housing. The people of Khayelitsha are friendly and welcoming and today there are many Township Tour operators, guesthouses, B&Bs and even a community radio station.
